incident. >> reporter: police tell us the suspect took franklin's purse. they did recover the kitchen knife used in this attack. live in south philadelphia, lu ann cahn, nbc 10 news. houses and mayneighborhoods across new jersey were hiding secrets. >> they were sex businesses operating in the suburbs and now linked to the murder and the alleged crimes don't stop there. nbc 10 jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenberg is live this afternoon in bridgeton. >> you have details on a federal prostitution bust announced today. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, keith and renee. neighbors tell me they believe this house served as a brothel for years. it's shut down and this investigate includes two recent homicide cases. >> one time they had guys lined up from the back of the house all the way out here on this street. >> reporter: ben moseley says he didn't need police to tell him that a house of prostitution

wases operating at the place next door on henry street in bridgeton. could you tell what was going on? >> ray charles could tell you what was going on. >> reporter: investigators say the house is linked to a large prostitution and human trafficking wing employing undocumented women across new jersey. today federal authoritiy ies arrested a new brunswick couple and accused them of running the business which allegedly had brothels in their hometown, bridgeton, asbury park, and orange. at least eight in all. >> see people going in and out, dropped off all time of day, sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes three, four, five, people. >> reporter: we also learned the investigation involves men who were killed. bridget toton police tell us wh unsolved homicides last month are tied to a pair of local brothels connected to the federal probe, but they won't elaborate. >> we hope that the release the u.s. attorney made today helps us and moves our investigations forward. >> reporter: the feds say

they've been investigating the alleged ringleaders, juan trafr gonzalez and his wife since 2012. bridgeton police tell us they found this house was serving as a brothel when they raided it in june and again during a second search in august. >> they've got a lot of kids around here, aen, you know, something like that, you don't want that in your neighborhood. >> reporter: now, we've learned members of the bridgeton police department were involved in a search today in mercer county where similar unsolved murders are being investigated as well. live in bridgeton, i'm ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues now with new developments in the center city beating investigation of a gay couple. it happened a week ago today. >> a philadelphia city councilman is now asking the feds to investigate it as a hate crime. a bucks county catholic school coach seen in the video has already resigned over the scandal, but police still haven't charged anyone in the

case. the reason, victims and the people being questioned in the case are blaming each other. nbc 10's deanna durante is following this story again for us. >> deanna, you just met with a local attorney representing one of the people wanted by police for questioning. what did you learn? >> reporter: i did. he tells me his client never laid a hand on anyone. he's merely seen on a piece of surveillance video walking down the street. he also says that too many people are rushing to judgment in this case. >> the person i represent approached me about this three days ago, and we're deciding what our next course of action will be. of course, i have spoken to law enforcement. >> reporter: but lewis says his client has not talked with police. he says he's not ruling out allowing a statement to be made, but he says it's not going to happen today. >> no one went out that evening looking for an altercation, no one went out looking to hurt, bash, assault anybody. these are individuals who sadly met at the wrong time and something clearly inappropriate and possibly criminal occurred.

but let's wait and see what it is before we start saying who's guilty and who's not. >> reporter: and that's what police say they are still working on tonight. and we are tracing down the steps that police are taking. a large group, according to sources, dined at this center city byob on thursday. later in that evening the group is spotted on two pieces of surveillance video, one taken from here, another from atm camera down the street and police say two homosexual men were assaulted near 16th and chancellor, two blocks away from the restaurant. investigators released this video in the hopes of being able to determine who was in the crowd. yesterday four people arrived at central detectives including a former coach at archbishop wood. when the man was questioned about his reinvolvement, he resigned his position there. the archdiocese confirms many of those seen on this video are wood graduates. police say still too much work needs to be done before determining when charges will be filed. now, we have learned from investigative sources that more witnesses are expected to talk

to police in the next several hours, but they also tell us that they do not expect any charges to be filed until at least monday. reporting live in center city, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. >> deanna. thanks. our coverage of this beating investigation continues. in less than 30 minutes from now, nbc 10's legal expert joins us to explain the law of what constitutes a hate crime and why charges haven't been filed. look for his analysis at 4:30. in the meantime right now the manhunt continues for an outdoor survivalist accused of shooting two pennsylvania state troopers. killing one of them. >> hundreds gathered to pay respects to that fallen officer. ♪ they gathered in scranton this morning for the funeral of 38-year-old trooper bryon dickson. dickson was murdered friday during a shift change in pike county.

another trooper was also shot but is now recovering. state police are holding a news conference on this case now. doug shimell is in northeast pennsylvania again today getting updates from investigators on the manhunt and also getting reaction to all of this from the suspect's sister. >> reporter: the search of these dense woods was scaled back for a few hours so state police could attend the funeral of their friend while the family of eric frain went public on his behalf. her brother has not been seen since police say the survivalist ambushed and killed pennsylvania state police corporate bryon dickson and wounded alex douglass. the sister, tiffany, told nbc news, "he's not a psycho. he did something messed up but he's still a human and has feelings. it's not our family's fault." the family of the murdered trooper was the focus of a service attended by countless

law enforcers from as far away as canada. as an entire region mourns and schools are still closed during the manhunt, tiffany tells nbc news "we're not trying to protect him. he has to suffer the consequences but he's still our family. "i don't know where he is or what he's doing. i hope it's a big misunderstanding." law enforcers said they paid little mind from any of the comments coming from the family. in pike county, i'm doug shimell, nbc 10 news. and we're learning that eric freen attended two pennsylvania schools in the last decade. he attended east strasbourg university in beth le university in beth lhem and northampton college community college. extra security has been added to the monroe campus due to the police manhunt. nbc 10 keeping close tabs on this manhunt. as soon as there are new developments in the case, we'll bring them to you live right here on nbc 10. as well as on our website, nbc10.com.

we have new information in the case of a newlywed couple from p.a. who lured a stranger to his death using a craigslist ad. the pair was sentenced to life without parole for the killing of troy liferara. a judge says 19-year-old veranda and her 22-year-old husband must be permanently removed from society. they pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder. police hope video can help them catch the man who robbed a check cashing store in juniata park on east hunting park avenue. surveillance cameras spotted the suspect on the sidewalk in the neighborhood. if you recognize this guy, call police. the trial for montgomery county man accused of killing a 10-month-old girl and her grandmother could start next week. seven jurors have been selected. the jury could be seated by tomorrow. raguna yandamore is defending himself.

he's indicated he'll argue the two other people committed the crimes. he could face the death penalty if convicted. prosecutors say the 27-year-old upper merion man abducted the baby from the family's king of prussia apartment in october 2012 and killed the baby's grandmother. the baby was later found dead. today, philadelphia city council voted on legislation to decriminalize marijuana. the bill creates a civil offense for possessing fewer than 30 grams or an ounce of marijuana. violators will face a $25 fine, but no arrest or criminal record. the measure also includes a separate civil offense for public use of a drug. that carries a $100 fine or up to 9 hours of community service. all right. now to decision 2014. and the race for pennsylvania governor. democratic candidate tom wolf made a campaign stop in chester, delaware county, today. it's part of his fresh start tour. wolf visited the s.t.e.m. academy at showalter high

school, investing in education and public schools. on the other side, tom corbett did not make campaign appearance today. he's running for re-election against wolf in november. a new jersey politician is accused of shouting racial slurs while mooning people at a restaurant. joseph sorentino was running in middlesex county, nj ew jersey. he released a statement, seven years ago as a young man, i made a stupid mistake but i learned from it. i regret what happened. chris christie spent the earlier part of this week campaigning for republicans in south carolina and new hampshire. he's offering help today closer to home taking part in a fund-raiser in princeton jeff bell. bell is trailing but surveys also suggested many independent voters remain undecided. no republican has been elected to represent new jersey in the

u.s. senate since 1972. and earlier this morning, governor christie held his first news conference since may. he announced he's giving a job to a former top aide to former democratic governor jim mcgreevey. christie tapped jamie fox as his new transportation commissioner who held the same job under mcgreevey. christie railed against the legislative committee investigating the shutdown of lanes near the george washington bridge accusing democratic lawmakers on the panel of le leaking documents. >> i've known all along that this is a partisan pursuit. an absolutely partisan pursuit. and the leaking that's being done by the legislative committee is just further evidence of the fact that this is a partisan pursuit. >> the committee's co-chairman assemblyman says the governor's office has not turn ee eed over documents it has requested violating its pledge to cooperate fully. from our delaware bureau, a company controlled by the owner of the delaware park allegedly

owes more than $5,000 in delinquent business taxes. it's according to the delaware division of revenue. the company in question is owned by bill rickman. the news comes as he and other gambling industry officials are asking delaware lawmakers for financial help. some local college students are hoping for a fall freeze. >> and by freeze, here's what we're talking about. they want to stop education costs from spiraling out of control. nbc 10's south jersey bureau reporter cydney long continues 20 minutes of nonstop news live >> what are the students hoping to accomplish here? >> reporter: i can tell you they're really pushing to some certainty to their college career financially. by locking into the same rate of tuition for nine full semesters or 4 1/2 years, should it take them that long to graduate, it would help them financially stay on track. take a look at our video. lawmakers in trenton today took a close look at the state's rising college and university costs which over the last six

years have skyrocketed some 20%. when you boil down that to college tuition, per family, it could be an extra $10,000 to $15,000 a year. new legislation would cap or freeze tuition rates as to what an incoming freshman pays at the onset. for james campbell now at rutgers law school, he and some peers are bracing to pay back loans near $100,000. this at a time when the job market is also not flourishing. >> would really be helpful in terms of planning. i mean, you'd now absolutely how much you have to pay, the amount of time you have to pay it in. takes out a lot of guess work. i have a friend who has to pay back $800 a month to make sure she's on time. your first job, $800 is a lot of money. >> the way to have college more affordable is have students complete on time. the way to do that is provide financial certainty and incentive to finish. >> reporter: the bill did pass

in the higher education assembly committee today. why some lawmakers say it would actually impact the success rate of college students here in new jersey, bullet not all universities think so, and we're working on that part of the story. i'll explain that for you when i see you at 5:5 5. live on the rutgers camden campus in camden, i'm cydney long. we're learning more about the domestic violence accusations against jonathan dwyer. dwyer head butted his wife and broke her nose after she refused sexual advances in july and he punched her in the face the next day. dwyer was arrested yesterday on aggravated assault charges and banned from all team activities. dwyer is the latest nfl player caught in the middle of a scandal. ray rice is facing assault charges for the beating of his now-wife janay palmer rice. adrian peterson is facing child abuse charges.

and greg hardy of the carolina panthers also accused of domestic violence. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with a strategy for the united states and its allies to stop isis. the u.s. senate is expected to approve president obama's plan to train and arm syrian rebels fighting the militant group islamic state. the house approved the measure yesterday, both secretary of defense chuck hagel and secretary of state john kerry testified at house hearings today. kerry tells lawmakers the u.s. is determined to build a strong coalition in defeating isis. australian officials say isis had plans to carry out random beheadings in sydney and then videotape the attacks. their plot was foiled when police detained 15 people and raided more than a dozen properties in sydney. intelligence officials say the group's plan had been in the works since may. just last week, australia's prime minister raised the terror alert from medium to high.

and isis has released a new propaganda video that appears to declare war on the u.s. the video entitled "flames of war: fighting has just begun" was reportedly released by the militant group's media center speaks to be a response to president obama's speech last week on the campaign to destroy isis. developing right now, voters in scotland have been heading to the polls to decide whether to become an independent country. it's an historic vote for scottish independence and the fate of the united kingdom is at stake. more than 2,600 polling places are open for the next hour. turnout was predicted to be high today. let's take a live look from a polling place in eddboro, scotland. a lot of people out there. voters are deciding whether to remain part of the uk or become an independent state. residents as young as 16 years old can cast a ballot. officials believe teens may be the deciding vote here.

on the ballot is one simple question. should scotland be an independent country? it's a debate that's divided scots for two years of campaigning. if voters decide yes, it would trigger 18 months of negotiations between scottish leaders and london-based politicians on how the two countries would separate their institutions. that would need to happen for scotla scotland's planned independence day on march 26th, 2016. scotland has been part of the uk for 307 years. polls will close in less than an hour at 10:00 p.m. scotland time which is 5:00 our time. early poll numbers show the race too close to call. results will start coming in early tomorrow morning. we should know the decision by early afternoon. now, your nbc 10 first alert with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, we have kind of a mix of sun and clouds around, and increasing sunshine from west to east now for the rest of the day.

but we've got another cool night. as we cool out, those temperatures are going to drop fairly significantly. we do have a warmer weekend. it's going to be a whole lot warmer on sunday than it is right now. and possibility of some showers before the weekend is over with. at the moment, we have temperature of only 70 degrees at philadelphia international. the sun starting to come back out after a few hours of cloud cover. wind out of the west at 10. we're 4 degrees cooler than we were at this time yesterday. right now, temperatures are in the mid 70s where the sun is coming out. in allentown, in reading. and cooler as you can see in washington township and clayton, for example, where the clouds were a little bit thicker. trenton is 72 degrees. and we're well into the 70s at the shore and delaware beaches where the clouds have not come in yet. back to the west, well, it gets a little bit warmer, and then it gets a lot warmer.

close to 90 degrees out there in the plain states. a little bit of that air is going to head our way for sunday. you can see this band of clouds coming through. and a lot of clearing behind it. we had just aú couple of isolad little showers, especially in delaware, over the past hour. it's mainly dry. we'll continue to dry out even more tonight and tomorrow, possibly a little bit of light shower in delaware as well. we're watching to the west to see a front coming in, and that is going to be affecting us over the weekend. but this is sunday morning now. and the front is still pretty far to the west. 8:00 a.m., it is still back to the west. noontime, it's still in central pennsylvania. so the eagles may very well get their game in dry. but it may be a fairly close call. but it's definitely going to be warm. not exactly football weather, but pretty warm for the fans here. 84 degrees by 4:00 in the afternoon. now, for the rest of the night

country's economic recovery has been slow to reach the delaware valley, and it's now showi ining in new census data. philadelphia posted the largest income drop among large metro areas outside the sun belt from 2010 to 2013. economists say it's because of an exodus of residents and continued collapse in mid-wage jobs. census data released today shows the media household income for the philadelphia area was slightly more than $60,000 in 2013. that's down from about $62,000 in 2010. there's one thing helping the area's economy. immigration. a spokesman for the brookings institution says in part the number of immigrants with college degrees is double those without high school diplomas. just minutes remain until

the deadline passes for someone to cash a winning lottery ticket and collect a million bucks. the winning ticket was sold a year ago. no one comes forward by 4:30 this afternoon, looking at my watch now, it's five minutes from now, the money vanishes. there's no word yet if the prize was claimed. we're really hoping someone comes forward. the $1 million ticket was sold in philadelphia at the news stand. you saw it there there. matched the first five numbers at 07, 10, 22, 32, and 35, but not the powerball of 19. bottom line here, folk, check your tickets. regardless of what happens, the news stand will get a $5,000 commission. so there's that. right now the search for a man who stabbed a local business owner. >> that is our top story on "nbc 10 news at 4." the woman was stabbed and robbed inside her south philadelphia business on broad street. he was able to walk to the hospital that was right across the street. where right now she is in critical condition. get a load of this. later, scanning the streets.

making nbc 10 news headlines today. a philadelphia city councilman is now asking the feds to investigate the beating of a gay couple in center city as a hate crime. bucks county catholic school coach seen in this surveillance video has already resigned because of the incident, but police still haven't charged anyone. that's because the victims and the people being questioned, they're blaming each other. attorney representing one of the people being questioned tells nbc 10 the process needs to be played out before making judgments. let's get prospective on this developing news now. >> joining us live, nbc 10 legal analyst. enrique, we know attorneys have been bringing people in to speak to police, though no warrants are issued or charges filed. you're an experienced criminal attorney. would you do that if they were your client? >> well, it depends on the case, and it depends on who your clients are. if your clients are good people, never been in trouble before, they work or they go to college, and they're positive members of the community, i definitely would bring them in. i would allow them to be able to tell their side of the story to

the investigators. you want the investigators in this case to see the other side of this story. this case is a one side against the other side. one side is blaming the other side. if the investigators only have one side, and you have good clients and good clients that portray well, i definitely would bring them. in. let them sit down with the investigators and tell their side of the story. >> no charges have been filed, but enrique, in your professional opinion, can anyone be charged with a hate crime in the investigation? >> you can't be charged with a hate crime in pennsylvania under. there's intimidation which is a pennsylvania crime. however, does not include sexual orientation. in order to charge someone with a hate crime for sexual orientation, it has to be charged federally. it has to be the person violated this person's civil rights because of their sexual orientation. that means the fight occurred as a direct result because the person was gay. so they have to prove that the fight occurred because the person was gay and this person violated that person's civil rights.

then they could charge them federally. >> okay. nbc 10 legal analyst, enrique, thank you very much for your insight. we always appreciate it. >> thank you. nbc 10 has multiple news crews working this story. as soon as we uncover new information, we'll bring it to you live on nbc 10, also on our website, nbc10.com. here are some of the other stories making headlines right now on "nbc 10 news at 4." a woman working inside a south philadelphia temp agency right now in critical condition. she was stabbed and had her purse stolen by a man who came looking for a job. when he was told there was no work available. he got angry and stabbed the 53-year-old victim. the search continues for her attacker. the man accused of killing a pennsylvania state trooper is now in the fbi's most-wanted list. authorities say putting him on the list will now allow the fbi to use more resources in the manhunt. frein is accused of killing corporate bryon dickson. this cumberland county house is linked to a prostitution

ring, employing unemployed woman of new jersey. the investigation also involves two recent murders. a tacony neighborhood is drying out this afternoon after an early morning water main break. happened on gillespie street. the break in the eight-inch main flooded the street and caused water to come out of the sidewalk and into yards. >> i tried everything. sink, toilet, shower. i come outside and i saw all these flood, all this wauter. i thought something happened. >> crews remain on site now making repairs. 60 properties are still without water. service should be restored by the end of the work day. from our delaware bureau, it took three years and hundreds of construction workers, but the a.i. dupont hospital for children is about ready to open its $272 million facility.

nbc 10 in wilmington today for a tour of the new building. the new emergency department is twice as big as the current one. there's a new atrium, gift shop, and cafeteria. architects aim to make the building brighter and more family friendly. >> i saw one little girl come through here and her eyes were bright and it was magical and i said, what do you think? she says, so cool. >> that's the reaction you want. patients will begin using the new building in mid-october, but the opt has a community day planned for this saturday. if you'd like to come out and see the new building for yourself. how beautiful. >> yeah. awesome. check this out. guardian angels were in south jersey this morning cleaning up this camden row home that was reportedly visited often by dr. martin luther king jr. it's believed that a friend or family relative of dr. king's once lived here in the late 1940s. volunteers are now trying to memorialize the home and make it an historical landmark.

dr. king reportedly spent time in south jersey from 1948 to 1951 when he was a seminary student. he studied at theological cemetery in upland county. the home was slated for demolition until they stepped in to save it. >> martin luther king lived here, it's important an organization preserve that history and also uses that space as an opportunity for emerging leaders and organizations and even small businesses to have a space which is what the future of this home will be. >> the group that owns the home is waiting on anecdotal evidence that proves dr. king lived in the home. once that happens, volunteers say there will be a nmassive fund-raising effort to restore the home. this place is so scary. america's largest haunted house right here in philadelphia. it opens tomorrow. and nbc 10 was there for a scary

new research may show why some people have success losing weight while drinking diet soft drinks, while others are more likely to become obese. doctors found that it could depend on how artificial sweeteners impact the bacteria found in our digestive systems. experts say more research needs to be done before recommending that people stay away from artificial sweeteners. going to want to listen to this one. a new tool to stop people from texting while driving. a virginia company is working on police radar that can detect when a driver is texting. com sonic says the device picks up radio frequencies admitted from a cell phone when the person behind the wheel is texting. the radar is close to production but still needs legal approval before law enforcement can begin using it. local students are giving lawmakers a lesson. >> and a piece of their minds. we'll tell you about the case they're making that could save you thousands.

a dog that vanished from our area has turned up in oregon. the jack russell terrier was found wandering the street near portland. she was taken to an animal shelter where the scan of a microchip revealed she came from pennsylvania. her name, gidget, and their owner had last seen her two days after easter. somehow she ended up a very long way away from home. her journey was more than 3,000 miles ending up in the town of tualotin. how she got there remains a mystery. >> clearly she had some sort of a ride here. her paws were in good shape. she'd apparently lost about five pounds, but she's gained weight here in the shelter and is definitely healthy and well and fine. >> but there was a bit of a problem. the unidentified local owner doesn't have the money to fly out to oregon and the shelter doesn't provide transportation. but this afternoon, nbc 10 news learned people have come forward with donations to pay for a flight home. one of the donors is a

washington state woman. another an east coast governor who wanted to remain anonymous. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well, here's one area that wasn't affected much by the clouds today. this up in the pocono mountains. lake wallenpaupack. what a beautiful view. and they're going to be cool again tonight. they've been in the 30s for a couple of nights and going to be another one like that. and 40s in many of the other portions of the area. it's going to be a warmer weekend. temperatures actually going into the 80s and some weekend showers, it's possible before the weekend is over with. but in philadelphia, we did have some clouds, at least for a few hours, keeping the temperature down a little bit. been up to 74. right now it's 70 with the west wind at 10 miles an hour. and the rest of the area shows that it's warmest to the north and west where the sun has come back out. like 75 in allentown. and a little bit cooler around

wilmington and into portions of south jersey where as you can see, these clouds have come through. just a couple of sprinkles around central delaware as you see, and that's about it for any kind of rain. and the future cast shows that, and it just goes away. it's a very, very small-scale system. the bigger system is going to be a cold front coming in from the west. so, here we are on saturday. and we're basically dry. we have some clouds in the morning, but we're going to be watching the showers along with this front. at 8:00 in the morning on sunday, the front is way to the west. there's no threat of rain at all. even at noontime, really not much of a threat of rain, but there's some stuff developing in the middle of the state that we're going to have to keep our eye on and it may be a close call toward the end of the eagles game, but it certainly is going to be warm. into the mid 80s. we'll, of course, update tomorrow about that potential shower threat. right now it looks like it may

about it. nbc 10 south jersey bureau reporter cydney long joins us live from the rutgers camden campus. >> some students and lawmakers are working to make changes, but there are some hurdles ahead. >> reporter: keith and renee, that is correct. this passed a small assembly committee today. the bill has a way to go before it would reach the governor's desk. what lawmakers are trying to do is put into place a tuition cap or tuition freeze, if you will, for nine semesters for all public and private universities here in new jersey. that is about 4 1/2 years equivalent to what it usually takes a college student to graduate. now, lawmakers say it will attract more new jersey students to actually enroll in universities here and graduate instead of dropping out in debt and without their degrees for an out of state or community college option. >> i just really think it's a crime. the interest rate and the cost of kids today going to college. it's a crime. it really is. >> it's not easy at all. it's definitely incredibly
